If you’re already a proud EV owner or are considering switching over, you probably know that these vehicles need to be charged in order to get you through Westport. Are all electric car chargers the same? If you buy a new EV, do you need to purchase a new charger? There is no need to do that because home electric car chargers are universal. All EVs need the same standard plug for Level 1 and Level 2 charging, the two most common ways to charge. The only form of charging that is exclusive to a certain brand is the Tesla Supercharger.
Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield is here to give you the facts on the different types of electric car chargers. After you’re done reading this article, check out a Mercedes-Benz EQS or another great EV from our lineup.
People in Norwalk have three types of electric car chargers to choose from. Conveniently, they’re named Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. What separates these three variants? Here’s our comparison:
Level 1 chargers add roughly 3 to 5 miles of charge per hour. You do not need to install any special equipment to take advantage of Level 1 charging; all you need to do is plug the charging equipment into a standard wall outlet. Because Level 1 charging is the slowest form of charging, it works best with the smaller batteries found in plug-in hybrids. This form of charging is most suited to people with short commutes.
Level 2 charging can charge between 12 to 80 miles to your EV per hour. If you’re always running errands or have a longer commute to work, you’ll want to use Level 2 home charging. You can get a special charging box installed in your garage to make this possible. In most cases, Weston EV owners will be able to fully charge their batteries overnight this way.
Level 3 charging is the fastest way to charge; 3 to 20 miles per minute is typical. Level 3 is also called DC Fast Charging because it uses direct current instead of the alternating current that slower charging methods use. You won’t be able to use Level 3 at home because of the high voltage required, but more and more places near Fairfield are installing DC Fast Chargers. You can often find Level 3 chargers at grocery stores, hotels, office parks, and other places with heavy car traffic.
You should know there are a few different types of electric car chargers for Level 3 charging. Most places that offer DC Fast Charging that aren’t Tesla will have both of the standard plug types in use right now.
We have shown you that all electric car chargers are the same when you use Level 1 or Level 2. Do you have more questions about fitting an electric vehicle into your life?
