Do Electric Cars Use Oil?

2020 Audi Q5 Electric charging

There are some fairly obvious differences separating new electric cars from traditional gas-powered vehicles—but you might be surprised to learn just how different they actually are. Just for starters, do electric cars use oil? Not at all! From the moment that you decide to upgrade with an electric car, oil changes will become a thing of the past.

What Kind of Service Does an Electric Vehicle Require?

With that said, EVs do require regular maintenance. Some things won’t change: you’ll still need to have your tires rotated on schedule, for example. You’ll also need to check in on your transmission fluid and your coolant every so often. But without an internal combustion engine under the hood, there’s absolutely no need to schedule oil changes, replace your spark plugs, or swap out your engine air filter as your vehicle increases in mileage.

Each EV has its own maintenance schedule, but you can get a better understanding of what’s required by exploring the service schedule for the new EQS from Mercedes-EQ. The following list isn’t exhaustive, but it should help you get started:

  • Every 10,000 Miles – Rotate tires to ensure even wear
  • Every 20,000 Miles – Replace brake fluid, replace dust filter, check battery and braking systems, check and replenish coolant
  • Every 60,000 Miles – Replace fine particle filter

Mercedes-Benz of Fairfield’s technicians will perform additional checks and inspections when you schedule service with our team, but for now, it’s worth emphasizing that EVs generally require less maintenance than gas-powered vehicles. Plus, electric powertrains are much simpler than internal combustion engines, and that means they’re less likely to break down as you rack up mileage on the roads of Westport and Norwalk.

Replacing an EV’s battery can be a significant expense, but the EQS is covered by the industry’s leading electric battery warranty, which protects you for up to 10 years or 155,000 miles.
