Mercedes-Benz Goes All-Electric: Plans & Milestones

The much-anticipated EV tipping point is inching closer every day, and Mercedes-Benz is leading the way by transitioning from an “electric-first” to an “electric-only” strategy. Here’s what that means in practical terms:

• Between 2022 and 2030, Mercedes-Benz plans to spend more than 40 billion in EV research and development.
• As early as 2022, eight unique Mercedes-Benz electric cars and SUVs will be produced across three continents. The brand’s assembly and production facilities are also aiming to become carbon neutral by 2022.
• Custom electric architecture has been developed for the EQS, and today, Mercedes-Benz already has the ability to mass produce electric vehicles.
• By 2025, three new electric architectures will lay the foundations for the brand’s all-electric future. (Several future Mercedes-Benz EQ models will use the scalable architecture of the EQS; others will be based on these new platforms.)
• After 2025, all of the brand’s new architectures will be built exclusively for all-electric vehicles.
• By 2030, Mercedes-Benz will have the capability to deal exclusively in electric vehicles wherever market conditions allow.

Your First Look at Future Mercedes-EQ Models

The custom architecture that was developed for the EQS is fully scalable, and that means it can be used for a wide variety of different vehicles, across many segments. Right now, we have solid information on four Mercedes-Benz future electric vehicles:

• Mercedes-Benz EQS: The EQS is a member of the S-Class family, and it aims to be the gold standard among luxury EVs.The 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS will arrive at dealerships in Autumn of 2021, and you can preorder the model today.
• Mercedes-Benz EQE: The EQE has been billed as the business limousine of the future. Although it’s smaller than the EQS, it still offers a very luxurious experience.
• EQS SUV & EQE SUV: Although information on these vehicles is closely guarded, we can expect SUV variants of the EQS and the EQE to arrive at some time in 2022.

We can also expect electrified versions of platforms that are already popular with drivers in Norwalk and Weston. We’re not entirely certain of which of these vehicles will make their way to the U.S., or when, but you should still be on the lookout for:

• Mercedes-Benz EQA: An all-electric daily driver built on the GLA platform.
• Mercedes-Benz EQB: An all-electric compact SUV with the versatility of the GLB.
• Mercedes-Benz EQC: A fresh take on the GLC, one of the most popular SUVs in our lineup.
• Mercedes-Benz EQV: An all-electric van with all of the capability that you expect from the brand’s commercial vehicles.
